The 10,000g career change
In the Sewers, past Krobus, a dog statue sells new professional lives at a flat fee. Because profession bonuses apply at the moment of sale, not of making, the statue is an arbitrage machine. A Journal audit prices every swap, corrects the famous wool scheme, and documents the one rule that breaks every naive exploit.
- The dead zone is real and wiki-explicit: old bonuses vanish the moment you pay; new ones start the next morning. Goods shipped on respec day receive neither. Stockpile, respec, sleep, then sell.
- Break-evens are shockingly low for elite goods: a swap pays for itself at 7 radioactive bars, 11 bottles of ancient fruit wine, or 45 diamonds. Past those bars, respeccing before a sale is not clever; it is hygiene.
- The wool laundering scheme survives its audit, barely. Folklore prices the swap at +188g per cloth; against the honest Rancher baseline it is +94g, and a dedicated sheep ranch should never take it: two cloth a day at 564g beats one at 658g by 71%.
- The best statue play is a career, not a toggle: produce-side professions while you build, one 10,000g swap to the sell side before the first big sale, never look back. The fee also buys a guaranteed full-energy morning.
THE SEWERS – The mechanics are brief. Donate 10,000g at the Statue of Uncertainty, choose one skill, and that night both profession screens for that skill reopen. Experience and levels are untouched, whatever one guide site claims; there is no cooldown beyond one skill per visit; and the fee is flat while a farm’s income is not, which means the statue’s real price falls forever. Ten thousand gold is a fortune in the first spring and a rounding error beside a keg shed, which is why every strategy in this audit is gated on stockpile size, never on the calendar.
One rule governs everything else, and the desk quotes it because folklore routinely ignores it. The wiki states that existing bonuses disappear the moment a change is chosen, and that sell-price bonuses do not apply to items placed in the shipping bin on the day the profession is changed. Pay the statue at noon and you are professionless in effect until morning; goods binned that evening are priced with neither the old bonus nor the new one. The correct rite is a three-day liturgy: ship the last stockpile under the old professions, pay, sleep, choose, and sell the banked goods the next day. Vendors price instantly off live professions, so Pierre’s counter beats the bin for the impatient. One multiplayer footnote with money attached: a long-reported bug prices farmhands’ bin shipments off the host’s professions. Farmhands running price professions should sell in person, always.
§1Bonuses apply at sale
The entire respec economy rests on one property of the pricing engine: sell-price multipliers are computed when an item is sold, not when it is made. A chest of iridium bars smelted in Year 1 sells at Blacksmith prices the day after Blacksmith is finally taken in Year 3. Nothing bakes in at creation, with three carve-outs worth knowing. Production professions cannot be arbitraged: Miner’s extra ore, Geologist’s gem pairs, and Shepherd’s wool cadence roll at acquisition, and what was not produced is gone. Quality attaches at pickup: Botanist’s iridium forage applies to anything picked while Botanist, including forage already on the ground, but never to items already in a pocket. And the dead zone, above, is the only timing carve-out on the sale side.
Stockpiled units needed to repay a 10,000g one-way swap, by good · shorter is better · SDV 1.6
§2The wool laundering scheme, audited
The scheme, as whispered in profession threads: run Shepherd so the sheep print wool at maximum speed, loom everything into cloth, then pay the statue, defect to Artisan, and sell at +40%. The desk audited both halves. The production half is even better than advertised: a fed sheep at high friendship under Shepherd grows wool every single day, Shepherd’s quality bonus makes iridium wool routine, and 1.6’s loom rolls a second cloth from iridium wool every time. One maxed Shepherd sheep is, in practice, two cloth a day, and the loom is always correct: two cloth at Rancher prices beat the raw wool decisively.
The arbitrage half is where folklore fails its audit. The circulating figure prices cloth naked, 470g to 658g, a +188g delta and a 54-cloth break-even. But nobody running this scheme sells naked cloth: a Shepherd is a Rancher by branch, and Rancher’s +20% applies to animal-derived artisan goods, cloth included. The honest delta is +94g, the one-way bar is 107 cloth, and a full round trip, counting the wool not grown while defected, runs roughly 240 to 290. The verdict splits three ways. A dedicated sheep ranch stays Shepherd: the +17% price never repays the −50% volume, 379,000g to 221,000g over a season. A mixed farm heading for kegs was always going to Artisan anyway; its cloth’s +94g rides along free. And the retiring rancher gets the scheme’s one clean win: bank every cloth, take the one-way swap, and sell the herd’s life work at 658g. No return ticket needed.
§3The playbook
The canonical statue play, and the highest-value one in the game, is the season pass: Agriculturist while planting windows matter, one fee to Artisan before the first serious wine dump, repaid by bottle eleven. Forum arithmetic puts Artisan ahead of Agriculturist by three to ten times annually, which is why the swap is one-way for nearly everyone. The miner’s retirement follows the same shape, as this desk’s mining audit recommended: sell the bar backlog under Blacksmith, then swap once to Gemologist when the crystalarium wall outearns the pickaxe, a move that 45 banked diamonds justifies on their own. Gemologist even reaches backward: geode contents are priced at sale, so every mineral in the museum-overflow chests is retroactively upgraded.
The desk’s survey of lesser swaps runs shorter. Winter shelving of Tiller only pays for heavy animal operations; the community suggests it more than it does it. The fishing branch swap is lifestyle, not gold. Combat day-passes before a dungeon run work mechanically, but the min-max threads never bother: 10,000g of Spicy Eel does more. The two worth keeping: a respec into Botanist lands best the night before Salmonberry week, since quality attaches at pickup and the bushes do the rest; and any respec night grants a full-energy morning, exactly like a level-up. If the fee is being paid anyway, pay it on the evening you came home exhausted, and bank the espresso.
§4The decision rule
Reduced to one sentence: divide 10,000 by the per-unit delta of the goods actually in your chests, and if the answer is smaller than the stockpile, go pet the dog. The statue punishes tourists, whose round trips double the bar and clip their production professions in transit, and rewards farmers changing careers at the right moment, which is what it was carved for. Every audit in this series has found the same shape: the Valley rewards sequencing over loyalty. The mines taught it, the berries taught it, and the Statue of Uncertainty is the mechanism that makes it official policy: a 10,000g toll between who a farm was and who it is becoming.
F1 · Mechanics, the dead zone & the misinformation file
Mechanics: 10,000g per use; one skill per use; only skills with professions already chosen appear; that night both the level 5 and level 10 screens reopen (re-select the level 5 branch to change only the level 10). XP and levels untouched. No documented cooldown. Any respec night grants a guaranteed full-energy morning.
The dead zone, per the wiki: existing bonuses disappear the moment the change is chosen; sell-price bonuses do not apply to items binned the day of the change. The three-day liturgy: Day 1, ship the last stockpile under the old professions, then pay. Night 1, choose. Day 2, sell under the new bonuses (vendors price instantly; the bin also works from Day 2). Multiplayer: farmhands’ bin shipments have a long-reported bug pricing off the host’s professions; farmhands should sell in person.
Flagged misinformation: the claim that the statue resets skill levels (it touches professions only); a widely mirrored pre-1.4 “Artisan +50%” figure (it is +40%); and the belief that Tiller skips crops harvested before taking it (the current wiki keys the exclusion to foraged fruit instead). Console and mobile note: respecs have a history of platform-specific bugs; save before petting the dog.
F2 · The break-even ledger, complete
| Stockpiled good | Swap | Price change | Δ/unit | One-way | Round-trip |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Radioactive bar | to Blacksmith | 3,000 → 4,500g | +1,500g | 7 | 14 |
| Ancient fruit wine | to Artisan | 2,310 → 3,234g | +924g | 11 | 22 |
| Starfruit wine | to Artisan | 2,250 → 3,150g | +900g | 12 | 23 |
| Prismatic shard | to Gemologist | 2,000 → 2,600g | +600g | 17 | 34 |
| Iridium bar | to Blacksmith | 1,000 → 1,500g | +500g | 20 | 40 |
| Diamond | to Gemologist | 750 → 974g | +224g | 45 | 90 |
| Cloth (vs no profession) | to Artisan | 470 → 658g | +188g | 54 | 107 |
| Cloth (vs Rancher, the honest baseline) | Shepherd to Artisan | 564 → 658g | +94g | 107 | 213 |
| Gold bar | to Blacksmith | 250 → 375g | +125g | 80 | 160 |
| Goat cheese (vs Rancher) | to Artisan | 480 → 560g | +80g | 125 | 250 |
| Ruby / emerald | to Gemologist | 250 → 325g | +75g | 134 | 267 |
| Blueberry jelly | to Artisan | 150 → 210g | +60g | 167 | 334 |
| Cheese (vs Rancher) | to Artisan | 276 → 322g | +46g | 218 | 435 |
The Gemologist diamond is 974g: the game floors 750 × 1.3, and most databases print 975g. Round trips also forfeit production-profession output while away; the wool cycle’s true round-trip bar lands at roughly 240 to 290 cloth once lost wool days are counted.
F3 · The wool audit: three farms, three answers
The production engine: a fed sheep grows wool every 3 days; friendship at 900+ points cuts one day and Shepherd cuts another, reaching daily wool. Shepherd doubles barn petting friendship (+30 vs +15) and adds +0.333 to product quality, making iridium wool routine; 1.6’s loom rolls a second cloth at 10% from silver wool, 50% from gold, 100% from iridium. Net: one maxed Shepherd sheep is about two cloth a day. The loom is always correct: two cloth at 564g (1,128g) beats raw iridium wool (816g).
| Farm | Verdict | The number |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated sheep ranch | Stay Shepherd | 2 × 564g beats 1 × 658g by 71%; ~379k vs ~221k per 12-sheep season |
| Mixed farm heading for kegs | Defect once, keep the sheep | Artisan was the destination anyway; cloth’s +94g rides free at the 2-day cadence |
| Retiring rancher / ending save | Bank cloth, one-way, sell out | 107+ cloth banked; no return ticket needed |
Provenance note: Rancher boosting cloth is confirmed current on the wiki’s item tables and by community testing; its attribution to patch 1.6 specifically is folklore, unrecorded in the changelog. The strategy only needs it to be true now, which it is.
F4 · The respec decision chart
| Situation | Move | Gate |
|---|---|---|
| Kegs coming online, still holding Agriculturist or Rancher | One-way to Artisan | 11+ ancient fruit wines or 12+ starfruit wines banked |
| Active Skull Cavern career, bar backlog in chests | Ensure Blacksmith before selling | 20+ iridium or 7+ radioactive bars |
| Diamond wall running, diving days over | One-way to Gemologist | 45+ diamonds banked |
| Sheep ranch winding down or save ending | Bank cloth, one-way to Artisan, sell out | 107+ cloth banked |
| Sheep ranch ongoing | Stay Shepherd | Volume beats the +94g, always |
| Salmonberry or Blackberry week approaching | Into Botanist the night before | Foraging 10; the bushes do the rest |
| Round-trip toggles for bulk cheap goods | Keep your gold | 200 to 400+ units; rarely worth it |
| Anything shipped on statue day | Do not | The dead zone: neither bonus applies |
F5 · Multiplier reference
Sell-price professions, applied at sale: Tiller ×1.1 (crops); Rancher ×1.2 (animal products and artisan goods derived from them, cheese, mayonnaise, and cloth included, truffle oil excepted); Artisan ×1.4 (artisan goods, oil and coffee excepted); Blacksmith ×1.5 (all five bar metals); Gemologist ×1.3 (gems and minerals, floor-rounded); Fisher ×1.25 and Angler ×1.5 (not stacking; Angler supersedes); Tapper ×1.25 (syrups). Production professions roll at acquisition and cannot be arbitraged: Miner, Geologist, Gatherer, Shepherd, Coopmaster, and kin. Quality attaches at pickup, which is the Botanist timing rule.
