Juice on trial: an acquittal in two vegetables
No product in the Valley is mocked like vegetable juice, and the mockery is mostly deserved: for twenty-one of the twenty-three juiceable vegetables, the keg is the wrong machine and juice is the wrong product. A Journal audit of the other two finds a bottle that out-earns nearly every wine in the game, and a winter strategy that pays six figures on machine time worth nothing.
- Twenty-one of twenty-three vegetables should never see a keg. Pickles beat juice per machine-day for every vegetable in the game, and per unit for everything priced 200g base or less. Only the pumpkin (320g) and the red cabbage (260g) clear the bar.
- Pumpkin juice is the upset of the artisan economy: 1,008g a bottle under Artisan, adding 175g per keg-day, ahead of every wine in the game except starfruit (372g) and ancient fruit (273g). Red cabbage juice (142g) outruns melon and rhubarb wine.
- The winter dividend is the real prize. Pumpkins keep indefinitely, so a wide fall harvest becomes keg fuel for a season when kegs otherwise stand empty: roughly 7 juice cycles per keg, and a 50-keg shed turns the stockpile into about 330,000g of winter income on machine-days whose market value was zero.
- The ceiling is the cask. Juice cannot be aged; its listed price is its final price, forever. Iridium-aged starfruit wine reaches 6,300g while pumpkin juice stays at 1,008g, so the program retires the day the greenhouse and cellar come online. Juice is a phase of the farm, not a destination.
PELICAN TOWN – Every vegetable in the Valley can be pressed into juice, and the community has decided, with unusual unanimity, that almost none of them should be. The jokes write themselves: corn juice, parsnip juice, a keg occupied for days to produce a bottle worth less than the pickles a cheaper machine finishes sooner. The Journal set out to establish whether the reputation is earned, pricing all twenty-three juiceable vegetables against their three competitors: the raw bin, the preserves jar, and the wine the keg could have held instead. The unit of analysis throughout is time rather than gold, because gold is never the scarce resource on a working farm. The clocks are: tile-days of land, machine-days of keg capacity, and the farmer’s own trips to the shed. Judged on those clocks, the mockery survives its audit almost everywhere, and collapses completely in exactly two places.
§1The mechanics of a maligned bottle
The formula sheet first. Juice sells for 2.25 times the vegetable’s base price, lifted to 3.15 times by the Artisan profession; wine pays 3 times base, lifted to 4.2. Juice occupies a keg for 6,000 machine-minutes, which is 3.75 machine-days against the pickle jar’s 2.5 and wine’s 6.25. Like nearly all artisan goods, juice destroys input quality: an iridium pumpkin and a normal pumpkin produce the same 1,008g bottle, a single rule that drives most of the strategy in this report. And one door is closed permanently: wine, beer, pale ale, mead, and cheese may age in casks, but juice may not enter one. Its listed price is its final price for the life of the save.
Two footnotes complete the mechanics. Wheat, hops, and tea leaves are vegetables that keg into beer, pale ale, and green tea instead, and milled rice makes vinegar; none of them can be juiced. And version 1.6 quietly widened the market: positive-energy forage, from wild horseradish to winter root, can now be juiced on the same 2.25 multiplier, a change this report returns to in the winter section.
§2The 200g theorem
Hold one vegetable and consider its fates under Artisan: raw for 1.1 times base with Tiller, juice for 3.15 times, or pickles for 2.8 times base plus a flat 70. Setting juice against pickles gives the cleanest result in this audit: juice wins per unit exactly when base price exceeds 200g. Two vegetables in the entire game clear the bar, the pumpkin at 320g and the red cabbage at 260g. Everything else makes strictly more gold in a jar, and the cheaper the vegetable, the worse the loss, because the pickle’s flat bonus dwarfs the multiplier gap at the bottom of the price chart. A parsnip pickle sells for 168g against parsnip juice’s 109g, a 54% penalty for choosing the celebrated machine over the humble one.
The jar’s dominance is even stricter on the machine clock. Per machine-day, pickles add 0.68 times base plus 28 gold; juice adds 0.55 times base. The pickle line sits above the juice line at every price, with no crossover, ever: the jar is faster and carries the bonus. Even for the pumpkin, the one crop where juice wins per unit, pumpkin pickles add 245g per jar-day against the juice’s 175g per keg-day. The desk states the consequence as policy: never build a machine to make juice. If vegetables are the input, build jars. Juice enters the conversation only because the kegs already exist.

§3The keg league, read honestly
The jar verdict above would seem to end the story, except that nobody builds kegs for vegetables. Kegs get built for wine, in quantity, and so the honest question for a standing keg is not whether juice beats pickles but whether juice beats the wine the keg would otherwise hold. Here juice’s shorter cycle does real work: at 0.55 times base per day against wine’s 0.50, a vegetable out-earns any fruit priced up to roughly 1.1 times its own base. The consequences, charted in Fig. 12, are genuinely disruptive to the standard shed. Pumpkin juice beats pineapple, melon, and rhubarb wine, and every wine below them; only starfruit and ancient fruit stay ahead. Red cabbage juice clears melon and rhubarb as well. Cauliflower, the third-priciest vegetable, already loses to mid-tier wine, and everything below it amounts to vandalism of a perfectly good keg: corn juice adds 27g per keg-day, a 92% pay cut against pumpkin in the same machine.
The practical reading follows the calendar. A farm saturated with starfruit or a producing ancient-fruit greenhouse has no juice question; its kegs are spoken for. Every other farm, which is to say most farms between the first fall and the maturation of a greenhouse, is sitting on kegs that pumpkins can out-employ. The meme that juice is worthless comes from endgame players comparing corn juice to starfruit wine. In the mid-game window the league table looks different, and the pumpkin sits near the top of it.
§4The winter dividend
The strongest juice case in the game does not compete with wine at all; it runs where wine cannot. A wine loaded after Fall 22 finishes in winter, and then the shed goes quiet: fruit crops are dead until spring, and a farm without a greenhouse has nothing to load. The pumpkin is the answer the game appears to have designed for the problem. It stores indefinitely, so a wide fall harvest becomes winter keg fuel: each keg runs roughly 7 juice cycles between the last fall wine and the first spring load, needing one shed trip about every four days. The research series’ model prices the program at about 6,600g per keg for the season, and a 50-keg shed turns the stockpile into roughly 330,000g of winter income. The accounting argument is the elegant part: those machine-days had a market value of zero. Whatever the pumpkins would have shipped for raw, the winter shed pays it several times over, and the tile clock never enters the ledger because the crop was grown in fall and stored.
Two windfalls stack on top. Pumpkin is one of the game’s three giant-capable crops, and a giant pumpkin pays out 15 to 21 fruit, which is 15,000g to 21,000g of juice per windfall; since juice destroys quality anyway, the giant’s normal-quality payout loses nothing, making giant crops and juice natural partners in a way giant crops and raw shipping never were. And 1.6’s forage change opens a free tributary: winter root (base 70g) and snow yam (base 100g) dig up at no cost all winter and juice to 219g and 315g under Artisan. The desk notes the one caveat: with Botanist and no Artisan, iridium forage sells for double base raw, so pre-Artisan foragers should ship instead.

§5The cask ceiling
Every mid-game product eventually meets the endgame, and juice’s meeting is unkind. The mechanism is not the keg but the cask: wine ages to double value over 56 days in the cellar, and juice is barred from the cellar entirely. Iridium-aged starfruit wine sells for 6,300g under Artisan; pumpkin juice sells for 1,008g on the day it is pressed and on every day thereafter, forever. Once the greenhouse fills with ancient fruit and the cellar runs at capacity, every keg feeds the wine-to-cask pipeline and juice’s window closes. The desk’s recommendation is to close it without sentiment. Juice is a phase, correctly played and then correctly abandoned.
§6The verdict
The program that survives this audit has two crops and refuses all substitutes. Plant pumpkins wide every fall with Speed-Gro; stockpile the harvest; run it through the wine kegs all winter. Add red cabbage in summer once Year 2 unlocks its seeds, if kegs outnumber fruit. Juice everything at normal quality once Artisan is taken; before Artisan, ship the iridium and juice the rest; feed winter forage into whatever kegs remain idle. Never build a keg to make juice, never press anything under 200g base outside the winter-idle case, and retire the whole operation the season the cellar comes online. One clause remains for the completionists, and the desk reports it with a straight face: Full Shipment, and therefore Perfection, requires shipping exactly one juice. Any parsnip will do. It is the only context in which parsnip juice has ever been correct.

The machine clock: one machine-day is 1,600 machine-minutes; the game’s clock runs 60 minutes per hour from 6am to 2am and 100 overnight. Juice takes 6,000 minutes (3.75 days), pickles 4,000 (2.5), wine 10,000 (6.25), pale ale about 1.4 days.
Formulas: Juice = floor(2.25 × base), ×1.4 with Artisan. Pickles = 2 × base + 50, ×1.4 with Artisan. Wine = 3 × base, ×1.4 with Artisan. Value added per machine-day = (artisan sale price − raw sale with Tiller at normal quality) ÷ machine-days occupied.
The 200g theorem: 3.15b > 2.8b + 70 exactly when b > 200. Jar dominance: 0.68b + 28 > 0.55b for every b ≥ 0, with no crossover. Keg parity: a vegetable’s juice out-earns a fruit’s wine per keg-day when 0.547b > 0.496f, i.e. when b > 0.91f. Casks exclude juice by game rule, not by price.

With Artisan, juicing beats shipping at every quality tier, so quality on a juice-bound crop is wasted fertilizer: Speed-Gro for juice crops, Deluxe Fertilizer only for produce that will be eaten, gifted, or shipped raw. Without Artisan the iridium raw sale is within 2% of the juice; a pre-Artisan farm ships its iridium and gold produce and juices the normal and silver overflow.

The arithmetic: roughly 7 juice cycles per keg across the winter window at 3.75 days per cycle, one loading trip about every 4 days. Each cycle’s bottle sells for 1,008g against the 352g the pumpkin would have shipped for raw, an added 656g per cycle. The research series’ season model prices the program at about 6,600g per keg and roughly 330,000g across a 50-keg shed. The machine-days spent had no competing use; the strategy’s entire cost is the fall tile-days, which pumpkins repay at 3.6× over raw shipping when juiced.
Windfalls: a giant pumpkin drops 15 to 21 fruit (15,000g to 21,000g of juice), unharmed by the quality destruction rule. Winter forage juice under Artisan: winter root 219g, snow yam 315g, from free inputs; with Botanist and no Artisan, ship iridium forage raw instead. Tile verdict for planters: per tile-day with Artisan, ancient fruit wine ~330g and starfruit wine ~212g dwarf red cabbage juice (~80g) and pumpkin juice (~70g); nobody with starfruit capital should plant a seed for juice. The Year 1 fall case stands because that capital does not yet exist, red cabbage is gated to Year 2, and pumpkin juice multiplies the tile’s raw yield 3.6×.

Situations that sound like juice cases and are not. A vegetable surplus is a pickling problem: jars are cheaper (Farming 4; 50 wood, 40 stone, 8 coal against the keg’s Farming 8 recipe), faster, and better per machine-day for all 23 vegetables. Juice for energy loses to cheap cooked food, and the high-value juices come from inedible vegetables in any case. Corn’s three exits are juice (156g), oil (140g with Artisan), and pickles (210g); pickles win, and corn juice’s sole distinction is beating the Oil Maker, the one machine that treats corn worse.
The completionist clause: Full Shipment requires shipping one Juice; Perfection requires Full Shipment. One parsnip suffices.
