Starfruit vs Ancient Fruit, which is better? A thorough audit.

Ancient fruit almost triples starfruit's raw yield; starfruit's wine is worth 36% more per bottle. The Journal took into account fertilizer breakpoints, machine time, and a 20,000g profession loophole, and we found that the correct farm refuses to choose.

  • The 20,000g “Artisan flip” at the Statue of Uncertainty breaks even once 50,000g of base-value wine is stockpiled (about 23 starfruit wines) and at scale accounts for a fifth of farm income.

Every farmer who clears the Community Center eventually stands at Sandy’s counter and confronts the Valley’s oldest economics question. Starfruit and ancient fruit sit alone at the top of the crop price chart; both make the game’s most valuable wines; both command partisans on every forum thread ever written on the subject. The Journal has now resolved the question the boring way, with arithmetic recomputed independently against wiki-verified 1.6 mechanics, and the answer will disappoint both camps. Neither crop wins. They win different constraints, and the distinction organizes everything else in this report.

§1A tax collector in the desert

Start with the structural facts. Starfruit sells for 750g at base quality, the second-highest raw price of any crop, but must be re-bought every cycle at 400g a seed, a recurring 53% tax collected daily at the Oasis. Ancient fruit sells for 550g, but its seed cost is effectively zero: donate the Ancient Seed artifact to Gunther once, multiply the packet through a Seed Maker, and the plant regrows every seven days across spring, summer, and fall, and forever in the greenhouse or on Ginger Island. Farmers planning to rely on the Traveling Cart should note the fine print: as of patch 1.6.3 the cart no longer sells Ancient Seeds. The museum-and-Seed-Maker route is now the only road in.

§2The raw baseline is not close

On raw sales the ledger is lopsided. A mature ancient fruit plant returns 78.6g per tile per day; a starfruit tile, net of its seed, returns 26.9g. Ancient fruit nearly triples it, and the gap survives every quality tier. So why does anyone plant starfruit? Because nobody serious sells these fruits raw. Once wine enters the picture the question stops being gold-per-tile-day and becomes gold-per-keg-day, and each starfruit carries 36% more wine value than each ancient fruit (2,250g vs. 1,650g base). And because starfruit, unlike a mature ancient plant, responds to fertilizer, which is where the audit found its headline number.

§3An 80g fertilizer and a rounding error

Speed fertilizer removes growth days by a rule more generous than its label: days removed equals total days times the speed bonus, rounded up, and the game computes the product in 32-bit floats, so Speed-Gro’s nominal 10% on a 13-day starfruit evaluates to 1.3000001 and rounds up to two full days. The breakpoint that matters is Deluxe Speed-Gro, sold at the Oasis on Thursdays for 80g: it alone cuts starfruit to 9 days, converting summer from two harvests into three, no profession required. Adding the Agriculturist profession tightens growth to 8 days, which buys replant slack, not extra yield. Past 25% total speed, starfruit’s annual output never improves again; a fourth harvest would need 6-day growth, which no legal combination reaches.

The money involved is not subtle. With Artisan wine, two harvests earn 5,500g per tile per summer after seed costs; three earn 8,250g. On a modest 200-tile plot, the third harvest is worth roughly +550,000g, purchased with 16,000g of Thursday fertilizer. The Journal is aware of no other 80g item in the Valley with that return.

§4Machines ignore crop quality

The audit’s second finding retires a whole school of fertilizer spending. The keg, the preserves jar, and the dehydrator all ignore input quality: an iridium starfruit and a normal starfruit make the exact same 2,250g wine, because every machine prices its output off the fruit’s base value. Wine quality exists, but it comes only from cellar casks, never from the fruit. For anyone running machines, quality fertilizer is therefore wasted gold, and speed fertilizer strictly dominates: more fruit at the same price each.

The correct sorting rule on harvest morning follows directly: iridium and gold fruit sell raw; everything else goes in a machine. An iridium starfruit at 1,650g raw with Tiller is worth more than half its own wine and costs six fewer days of keg time. Quality fertilizer retains two honest uses: a raw-sale greenhouse (Deluxe Fertilizer persists in greenhouse soil forever, yielding roughly 41% iridium fruit at Farming 10) and the Year-1 poverty sprint before a keg shed exists.

§5Kegs, jars, and the machine that ended the debate

Per fruit, the ranking is identical for both crops and unambiguous: wine, then jelly, then dried, then raw (Fig. 5). Per machine-day, the ledger flips: a preserves jar cycles two and a half times as fast as a keg and out-earns it on throughput even for the Valley’s two most expensive fruits (Fig. 6). The wiki’s own Keg page concedes that “the Preserves Jar will outpace the Keg regardless of the base value” outside three cheap exceptions. Yet every megafarm in the Republic runs sheds of kegs, and the reason is the number the per-day table conceals: fruit supply is finite. A greenhouse yields exactly 116 fruit a week; when fruit, not machinery, is the binding constraint, per-fruit value is what income is made of, and a jar on a weekly harvest cadence sits idle more than half of every week.

What settled the debate was patch 1.6’s dehydrator. At 7,910g per batch of five starfruit under Artisan, ready the next morning, one dehydrator generates 4,160g net per machine-day: seven times the jar, eleven times the keg. Per fruit it still pays less than jelly, so the overflow hierarchy is now mechanical: fill every keg first, dehydrate the surplus, jar only when out of both.

§6The Monday loop

Machine math becomes farm design only when synchronized with the harvest calendar, and here ancient fruit reveals its late-game dominance. Its 7-day regrowth arrives exactly as a 6.25-day keg frees up: harvest Monday morning, load 116 kegs Monday, wine pops Sunday, the next harvest lands Monday. Nothing queues, nothing idles, and the farmer’s labor is two mornings a week. This loop, not the per-fruit price, is why ancient fruit is the default endgame crop, and it is a loop the faster jar cannot join: on a weekly cadence, a jar spends roughly four and a half of every seven days empty, wasting exactly the speed it was bought for.

Starfruit’s problem is the opposite: a three-harvest summer delivers fruit in three 200-unit spikes, not a stream. Kegs absorb only about two loads between waves, so a pure-keg starfruit operation needs nearly one keg per plant, or a bank of dehydrators as the pressure-release valve, each eating five fruit a day until the spike is flat.

§7The Statue gambit

The Farming 10 choice between Agriculturist (+10% growth speed) and Artisan (+40% artisan value) looks like the game’s cruelest either/or. It is a timing problem, not a commitment. The Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers re-rolls professions for 10,000g a visit: farm all season as Agriculturist, stockpile the wine unshipped (every bottle in the chest is a +40% coupon waiting to be clipped), then pay the statue, sleep, pick Artisan, and sell the entire stockpile the next day before flipping back. The round trip costs 20,000g and pays for itself once the stockpile’s base value clears 50,000g: about 23 starfruit wines, or one week of a 116-keg greenhouse. A full summer starfruit run nets roughly +520,000g from a single flip. No other profession interaction in the game returns 2,600% on its fees, and one procedural warning has ruined enough farmers to repeat: profession bonuses do not apply to items already in the bin on the night of the switch. Sell the morning after, never the same evening.

§8The verdict: engine and turbocharger

One asset remains, and it breaks the last tie. Cellar casks age wine, and only wine, to double value over 56 days, which is exactly two seasons. Each cask-slot-season is fixed, so it should hold the highest-base bottle available: starfruit, whose iridium-aged, Artisan-priced wine at 6,300g is the most valuable bottle in the game. A cellar loaded on Summer 1 from the first fertilized harvest pours iridium on Fall 28, the same week the last fall ancient fruit is bottled. Sell it all on one flip.

The mature answer, which the forums keep arriving at and the arithmetic supports: ancient fruit is the engine; starfruit is the turbocharger. Build the self-sustaining ancient loop first (it is the best passive structure in the Valley), then spend summers, spare kegs, and every cellar slot on starfruit, where each optimization in this report pays its highest rate. The farmer who runs both, flips monthly, and sorts quality fruit to raw sales captures every gold piece this comparison has to offer.

Fertilize the starfruit, sync the ancient fruit, flip to Artisan on payday, and never let an iridium fruit touch a keg.

Starfruit holds the second-highest raw sell price of any crop, behind only the Sweet Gem Berry. The Seed Maker recycles a harvest into 1–3 seeds (average 2, 97.5% chance), but a pure seed-loop consumes roughly half of every harvest; most operators simply pay Sandy.

The rule: days removed = ceiling(total days × speed bonus), computed in 32-bit floats, so 13 × 0.10 evaluates to 1.3000001 and plain Speed-Gro removes two days, not one. Removed days strip one per growth stage per pass; the first stage never drops below one day. Worked example, Deluxe SG on starfruit: ceil(13 × 0.25) = 4 days removed; stages [2,3,2,3,3] become [1,2,1,2,3] = 9 days.

Ancient fruit note: speed bonuses apply to the initial 28-day growth only; the 7-day regrowth is never reduced by anything. Outdoors: 9 harvests/year at 10–25% speed, 10 at 33%+, vs. 8 unfertilized. In the greenhouse, speed fertilizer saves a one-time week on a plant kept for years.

Fertilizer sourcing: Deluxe Speed-Gro is 80g at the Oasis on Thursdays, even in Year 1. The Oasis closes for the Desert Festival (Spring 15–17); pre-buy the season’s seeds on Summer 1 so tight replant mornings are a five-minute chore, not a desert round-trip.

All three machines emit normal-quality product priced off base value regardless of input quality; the wiki’s Dehydrator page states the rule flatly. Dried ancient fruit is also, the record shows, edible: 688 energy from something ten thousand years old.

The 116-keg rule of thumb: a fully planted greenhouse holds 116 ancient fruit plants (120 tiles minus sprinkler overhead); one fruit per plant per week means exactly 116 kegs process every harvest with zero backlog. This is the cleanest production loop in the game and the benchmark every other setup is measured against.

Reference loadouts at 200-plant scale: an ancient greenhouse-plus-island core of 200 plants feeds 200 kegs for ~462,000g/week of Artisan wine on two mornings of work. A summer starfruit sprint of 200 tiles under Deluxe SG + Agriculturist yields 600 fruit across three waves; 200 kegs plus ~15 dehydrators clear each spike; season gross ~1.7M with the flip. Megafarm ceiling, for the curious: a documented full-automation build runs ~21,600 ancient fruit/year through ~1,350 kegs for ~46.9M g/year with Artisan, at which point the constraint is the operator’s willingness to click.

Why megafarms keg anyway, despite the jar’s throughput edge: fruit supply is finite (per-fruit value is what income is made of); jars idle ~60% of the week on a 7-day cadence; and at shed scale each jar’s 8 coal is the painful input. Community verdict on the forums’ jars-vs-kegs thread: jars for cheap crops, kegs for premium fruit.

Break-even: the flip earns +40% of the stockpile’s base value against 20,000g of fees: profitable past 50,000g base, i.e. 23 starfruit wines or 31 ancient fruit wines. One week of a 116-keg greenhouse (191,400g base) nets +56,560g per flip; a full summer starfruit run (600 wines, 1.35M base) nets ~+520,000g. Farms that no longer plant (greenhouse-only operations) can simply hold Artisan permanently: with Deluxe Speed-Gro alone, the third harvest never required Agriculturist in the first place, only a Summer-28 photo finish.

Each cask-slot-season is fixed capacity: fill it with the highest-base bottle (+3,150g vs. +2,310g per slot per full age). Fairy Dust (1 Diamond + 1 Fairy Rose) instantly finishes a keg and advances a cask one quality tier per dust. The 56-day iridium cycle is exactly two seasons: a cellar loaded Summer 1 pours iridium on Fall 28.

C7 · Methodology, caveats & sources

Methodology: all prices and mechanics verified against the Stardew Valley Wiki (fetched August 2026, version 1.6.x). Every derived figure (growth-day tables, harvest counts, per-machine-day rates, break-evens) was independently recomputed using the game’s decompiled growth algorithm (days removed = ceiling(total days × speed), 32-bit floats, stage-reduction loop) rather than copied from any single source. Where community sources disagreed with the wiki, the wiki won; sources predating 1.6 (the old Agriculturist stacking bug, cart-sold Ancient Seeds) were flagged or excluded.

Honest caveats: float rounding may shift a displayed price by ±1g in places (dried starfruit with Artisan renders as 7,909g or 7,910g depending on rounding path). Junimo Hut harvesting, Deluxe Grabber logistics, and Qi’s crop quotas are out of scope; none change the ranking. This report does not discuss coffee, the hops pale-ale printer, or Sweet Gem Berries.
